Boaters from around the world travel to this area to enjoy one of the finest interconnected systems of navigation in the world. Operated by Parks Canada, the Trent Severn Waterway stretches 386 km from Lake Ontario’s Bay of Quinte to Port Severn on Georgian bay with over 4500 km of shoreline. Native Canadians and voyageurs first traveled the waterway for commerce and trade. These early trade routes were enhanced by engineers with the first locks being built in 1835. This historic waterway, where memories run deep, consists of 36 conventional locks, two sets of flight locks, two of the world’s highest hydraulic lift locks, which are situated in Peterborough and Kirkfield, and the Big Chute Marine Railway. The locks are situated in a beautiful park-like setting and most are proximate to small, inviting communities. Changing water elevations and going through the locks are what makes house boating on the Trent Severn Waterway one of the most unique boating experiences you can have.
